I remember hearing moms worry about their little ones getting dirty and I'd say 'dirt never hurts!' Funny how it becomes harder to think these thoughts once the little one is yours.
We just returned from a camping and climbing trip to Vantage, WA. You never go climbing there without coming home covered in a layer of dirt. This trip was especially dirty, as the wind was blowing little dirt funnels across the campground. At one point, I wished I had packed clear safety glasses for everyone, so we could protect our eyes from the blowing dirt.
Needless to say, we had to get over the issue of K getting dirty. We took him up to the crag to hang out and play while we climbed with friends. What else would little boys do but pick up piles of dirt and throw it all over themselves? Well, they did enjoy one other activity, which was throwing rocks...but, that is not so approved of at climbing crags. :)
We let K get as dirty as he wanted to at the crag and campground, and we only bothered cleaning up his hands and face when it was meal-time or bed-time. One other family was intent on wiping down their little one's hands and face regularly...but, of course, two seconds of play and it needed to be done again!
We've all showered and cleaned up now, so it turns out the dirt didn't hurt anyone and it all came off! :) Little K had a great time playing with dirt and rocks with his buddies, and by the end of the weekend, he had learned to call himself a 'grubby monkey'. Now that is a successful camping trip with a toddler, if you ask me!
